To lose weight it’s important to understand that there are two kinds of overeating eating–habitual and emotional. The techniques that work to control habitual eating do not work for controlling emotional eating. This podcast is about a review of an article in which specific advice is given to overcome emotional eating. The only problem is that the advice has nothing to do with dealing with emotions—maybe avoiding them—but not dealing with them. Articles and books like this give false hope to emotional eaters in that they attempt to follow the advice of a so called expert or self proclaimed expert only to fail because the techniques are simply ineffective recycled techniques that have been around for decades. The result is that the individual feels a failure and may end up gaining more weight. For an approach to conquering emotional eating, you must listen to this podcast or read the companion article at http://www.dstressdoc.com/Articles/EmotionalEating6.htm

The first defense against stress in not Motrin or Tylenol; it is deep breathing. In response to any stressor, the body’s first reaction is shallow breathing which leads to muscle pain. By doing abdominal breathing throughout the day, you relax your muscles and promote well being. The good news is that it costs you absolutely nothing and will reward you with improved health.
